Episode 18: Brave Church
In this special episode, David & Rhonda introduce the first of several potential frameworks or methods that pastors might use when engaging in Courageous Conversations.
Rhonda interviews Rev. Elizabeth Hagan, author of Brave Church: Tackling Tough Topics Together. Elizabeth is a graduate of Duke Divinity School and has been a pastor for 15 years.
Fact Check: David tried to remember a quote he attributed to Rachel Held Evans about the importance of sharing communion and worship with people who think differently from herself. In fact, the quote was actually from Brene Brown.
Later in her interview with Rhonda, Elizabeth also quotes Brene Brown: “Vulnerability breeds vulnerability.” We haven’t been able to track down the precise quote, but Brown’s book Daring Greatly dives deeply into the subject of vulnerability.
Rhonda wonders whether church could be a bit more like an AA meeting. Brennan Manning’s classic book “The Ragamuffin Gospel” explores some of the ways that the church could learn from 12-step groups.
Elizabeth outlines five rules for Brave Church conversations: 1. Accept conflict and commit to the way of kindness. 2. Take responsibility for how your words are received. 3. Ask permission before challenging someone’s views. 4. Graciously receive feedback. 5. Use “I” statements rather than “you” statements.
